WebM proposed by Google, it is an open and free media file format. The WebM movie format is actually a new container format developed based on the Matroska (MKV) container format, which includes VP8 movie tracks and Ogg Vorbis tracks. Google has opened its VP8 video encoding technology under a BSD license, and Ogg Vorbis is already an open format. The WebM standard for online videos leans more towards open source and is based on the HTML5 standard. The WebM project aims to develop high-quality, open video formats for open networks, with a focus on addressing the core user experience of video services. Google says that the WebM format is quite efficient and should be able to be used smoothly on netbooks, tablets, handheld devices, and more.
YouTube was the first WebM-enabled video site. Anyone can watch WebM-based videos on YouTube in a WebM-enabled browser. Users can go to YouTube’s HTML 5 page and click on“Try HTML5 beta”, search for videos and add & WebM = 1 to the address bar to get WebM-formatted videos.
